I have created images overloaded with tension and contradictory emotions so as to provide a glimpse into my self-consciousness and the internal conflicts I experience related to body image and food… in particular sugar. These tensions are heightened through the merging of idioms culled from different genres of photography, other art form and representations that proliferate in contemporary popular culture. An abundance of bright, often lurid, colors, textures and shapes, as well as elements of traditional, black-and-white self-portraiture, juxtaposed in jarring, frenetic, imperfectly arranged patterns evoke the essence of this complex: simultaneous desire and repulsion, a psychological manifestation of our culture of opulence and seemingly endless supply.
